What will the weather be like for my Queenstown elopement?

When’s the Best Time of Year for a Queenstown Elopement?

It’s the question we get asked most — and the honest answer is: there is no bad time.

New Zealand weather is famously unpredictable. We’ve seen snow in Queenstown in February and clear, calm skies in the middle of winter. In the mountains, conditions can shift within the hour — light, wind, cloud, temperature — sometimes all four in a single afternoon. That’s not a problem. For elopement photography, it’s often an advantage.

What to Expect Each Season

Summer (December – February) — Long days, warm temperatures, and the best chance of clear skies. January and February are peak season for a reason. Expect crowds in town but solitude in the mountains.

Autumn (March – May) — Our personal favourite. Cooler temperatures, golden light, fewer people, and dramatic skies. April and May in particular produce some of the most beautiful elopement images we’ve ever made.

Winter (June – August) — Deep snow, alpine drama, and a completely different kind of beauty. July and August are ideal if you’re dreaming of a snow elopement or want to combine your wedding with a ski honeymoon.

Spring (September – November) — Unpredictable in the best way. Snow on the peaks, wildflowers in the valleys, and constantly changing light. Challenging to predict, stunning to photograph.

Why Experience Matters More Than the Forecast

After years of flying in the Southern Alps, we know how weather behaves across every location we use. Scott understands how wind direction, cloud levels, snow conditions, and even ground saturation affect each landing site — and he uses that knowledge to make the call on the day. There’s no formula for this. It’s experience, and it’s one of the most valuable things we bring to your elopement.

Our advice: plan your elopement around the time of year that suits you best for a holiday, and trust us to handle the rest. We’ve never yet failed to find somewhere extraordinary.

We also have a curated collection of designer and vintage fur jackets available year-round — so whatever the mountain throws at you, you’ll be warm and you’ll look incredible.

Summer (Dec, Jan, Feb)

Queenstown is typically hot with temperatures in the high 20s or mid 30 degrees.  Bring your sunscreen! The sun is high with bright sun and long days. Late afternoon and early evening wind and low cloud can form on the mountains.

Autumn (Mar, Apr, May)

Our favourite time of year in Queenstown. The trees in the region all turn shades of gold and red. The Autumn sun angle is low and the light is soft and flattering. Temperatures can be varied but cooling.

Winter (Jun, Jul, Aug)

Winter can be beautiful but do be prepared for sub-zero temperatures so dress accordingly. The surrounding mountains look spectacular when dusted with snow. June weather can be very unpredictable, wet and cold and inversion cloud conditions are common. Snow is more likely from July and settled winter days also more common from the end of July and August.

Spring (Sep, Oct, Nov)

We start getting spring growth and wild-flowers. The light is still soft in early spring. September and the spring equinox can result in high winds which can affect flights. So make sure you have back-up days available if you choose a spring mountain wedding. Generally, most snow on the surrounding mountains has melted by October and temperatures are getting warmer by November.
