A Winter Handfasting Elopement on Bayonet Peak, Queenstown

If you’re looking for a winter elopement on Bayonet Peak, Queenstown, Shannon and Taylor’s August day is a pretty good place to start. Blue dress. Blue kilt. Blue sky. White snow. A handfasting ceremony on one of Scott’s favourite landing spots in the range. And two people who were so genuinely present with each other that the camera barely had to try.

Bayonet Peak in August

Bayonet Peak sits within our Close to Queenstown collection and has been a favourite landing for Scott for years. In August, the peak is reliably snow-covered, the air is crisp and clear, and the views across the surrounding ranges are properly expansive. It’s close enough to Queenstown to be just a short 5 minute flight yet far enough up to feel like another world.

Winter light at altitude has a quality that’s sharp, clean, and flattering. Snow helps too. It bounces light back up from below and fills in shadows naturally. The result is a brightness and clarity in the images that’s distinctly Queenstown winter.

The Colour Story

Some days the styling just works, and this was one of them. Shannon’s blue dress and Taylor’s blue kilt were an unplanned gift against the white snow and pale winter sky — everything in the same tonal range, everything cohesive. It’s the kind of thing that looks like it was carefully art-directed, but really just came from two people wearing what felt right to them.

If you’re planning a winter elopement and wondering what to wear: this is a strong argument for leaning into colour rather than defaulting to white or neutral. Bold colour against snow photographs beautifully.

The Handfasting Ceremony

Shannon and Taylor chose a handfasting ceremony — an ancient ritual where the couple’s hands are bound together with cord or ribbon as a symbol of their commitment. It’s tactile, meaningful, and adds a beautifully visual element to the ceremony. Celebrant Andrew Bell officiated, and as always he brought the kind of calm, considered energy that lets a ceremony breathe.

A handfasting is also a good choice for couples who want something that feels a little different from a standard exchange of vows. If you’ve been thinking about it, Shannon and Taylor’s gallery gives you a pretty clear picture of how it looks in practice.

When It’s Obviously the Real Thing

We photograph a lot of elopements. Most are lovely. Some are genuinely moving — not because anything dramatic happens, but because you can see in the frame that these two people are absolutely certain about each other. Shannon and Taylor were that. There’s a quality to the photos that goes beyond the location or the light or the styling. Some of it is just them.

We’ll leave it there. The images say it better anyway.

What Is the Simple is Beautiful Package?

Shannon and Taylor went with our Simple is Beautiful package — our most streamlined option, and honestly one of the most popular for couples who know what they want and don’t need a lot of extras around it. It includes the helicopter flight, ceremony location, photography with Scott, and all the planning. Everything you need, nothing you don’t.

Bayonet Peak in August, with a handfasting and this much colour in the frame, is a pretty good example of what Simple is Beautiful actually looks like.
