An Autumn Elopement on Coromandel Peak, Queenstown
If you’re thinking of a Coromandel Peak elopement in autumn, then just do it. The light in May sits low and golden all day — the kind that makes everything look like it was lit by a cinematographer. Bex and Braden kept it beautifully simple: just the two of them, a helicopter, a celebrant, Scott to photograph and a mountain to themselves.
Why Autumn on Coromandel Peak is Special
Many people think summer when they think of Queenstown — blue skies, sharp light, bright alpine views. And that’s great. But autumn has its own magic, particularly on Coromandel Peak. The air is crisp and clear, you’re away from the crowds, and the light is warm and soft from sunrise to sunset. In May, you get that golden tone baked into every pic which is why it’s our favourite time of year.
Coromandel Peak — also known as Mt Roy — sits above Lake Wanaka and offers one of the most iconic views in New Zealand. On a clear autumn day, the lake stretches out below in shades of blue and slate, framed by the surrounding peaks, with views of Mt Aspiring in the distance. It’s genuinely hard to take a bad photo up there.
Simple Done Well
Bex and Braden chose our Simple is Beautiful package — and that’s exactly what it was. A helicopter flight to the peak, a ceremony with celebrant Sarah Noble, and the time and space to just be present in an extraordinary place. No big production, no schedule to stick to, just a couple of people making it official on top of a mountain.
The Ceremony
Celebrant Sarah Noble handled the ceremony, and as always she brought warmth and care to the whole thing. The vows were said at the summit with Lake Wanaka spread out behind them with plenty of laughs and a few tears in the mix.
Is Autumn a Good Time to Elope in Queenstown?
Short answer: yes. The weather in April and early May is generally settled, the temperatures are comfortable (bring a layer), and the quality of light is hard to beat at any other time of year. If you’re planning a Queenstown elopement and open on timing, autumn is genuinely worth considering. Days like Bex and Braden’s are why.
