Jade & Holly’s Autumn Elopement on Bayonet Peak

Jade and Holly travelled from Australia to get married in the Southern Alps, and April gave them a version of the mountain we love — golden tussock under grey, moody skies, with the rocky outcrops standing out hard against the colour. It’s a different mood to a bluebird day, and arguably a more dramatic one.

What We’re Actually Chasing in the Photos

The goal on every elopement is the same: genuine moments, not posed ones. Scott works to put couples so at ease that they forget the camera is there at all — no stiff angles or fake smiles, just two people being present with each other on a mountain. That’s when the real photos happen. Joy, love, the small unguarded moments between two people who are happiest exactly where they are. Those are the shots that hold up, regardless of what the sky is doing.

Autumn light helps. The lower sun and softer contrast on a grey day like Jade and Holly’s gives images real depth and luminosity, if you’ve got a choice get married in April!

Why we choose different landings for different seasons

Best of Queenstown, the Leisurely Way

Jade and Holly chose our Best of Queenstown package with a 75-minute landing — plenty of time and a good choice for couples who want time to actually settle into the experience rather than move through it quickly. More time on the mountain means more room for the ceremony to breathe, more time for photos without feeling rushed, and space for those unplanned in-between moments that end up being some of the best images from the day.

What’s included in our elopement packages

Celebrant and Ceremony Video

Stevie Woodward, from Married by Friends, led the ceremony — warm and personal, exactly what an elopement calls for. Jade and Holly also added a ceremony video, which meant the vows themselves were captured in full alongside the stills. It’s one of the optional extras you can add to any package, and a good one for couples who want to hear the day back, not just see it.

Video options

Autumn on Bayonet Peak, Grey Sky and All

Bayonet Peak doesn’t need sunshine to look good. Moody skies bring out the drama in the rock and the gold in the tussock in a way clear days sometimes flatten. If you’re picturing your elopement photos as bright and blue-skied by default you’ll be pleasantly surprised if it ends up like this instead.
